I've managed to get quite a lot done in between games of Bolt Action over the last few weeks.

US Airborne

Painting the Fallschirmjagers has slowed right down as I'm yet to figure out how to paint a good looking splinter camo so like all good wargamers I switched to another (easier) project.

A couple squads of US Airborne laying around in the sun.

So far I've managed to finish:

HQ Squad including (Lieutenant, Medic, Radioman and Forward Observer).

2 Squads of 10 men including NCO, 2 Bar and a mix of SMG, Rifles and Carbines.

30 Cal LMG team.

50 Cal HMG team.

Sniper team (upright and prone).

Light Mortar team.

There's probably another 30 miniatures in various stages of completion which I'll probably get done this weekend (maybe *crosses fingers*).

Terrain

Roads, I cut these out of 5mm MDF and glued sand onto them and then painted them with a latex paint. Nice and easy, maybe and hours work all up.

I've got some "wobbly" river pieces cut out just waiting for some attention but I'm just trying to find and easy way of building the banks up a little so they don't look so flat.

Tanks and Vehicles

I'll get some more photos of these up in the next couple days, but I must warn you now that the decals may not be accurate for a vehicle operating in North West Europe and the camouflage has been completely made up.

Anyway I'm off to go play another game of Bolt Action.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-64710153216724008842013-01-15T00:14:00.001+11:002013-01-15T00:14:43.674+11:00A Crazy Thing Happened This MorningA crazy thing happened this morning: I sat down to put together one of the model kits I've had laying around for a few years now and I just kept building. Sure there were interruptions and I even had to shuttle my wife around for a few errands bet every time I came back to the kitchen I picked the glue back up and continued to stick stuff to other pieces of stuff.

This almost never happens but I'm glad it did.

L to R: M4A3, M4 and the Pz. Kpfw K-V2

Both the M4 and M4A3 kits came with options for alternative turrets but the M4A3 came with enough parts to actually build both. I haven't looked into what the differences between the two are (if any) but it never hurts to have options even if they are purely cosmetic.

I don't have any Bolt Action stats for the KV-2 but it shouldn't be too hard to translate something from Disposable Heroes or Victory Decision.

I've put quite a bit of paint on the Warlord minis and have even built some terrain pieces but haven't managed to take any photos of them, I'll try to get that corrected some time tomorrow.

Up next a Jagdpanther and a pair of Fw190's.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-21841299571120826872012-12-04T13:07:00.000+11:002012-12-04T13:07:08.603+11:0028mm 101st Airborne Decals

I've been busy working on my Fallschirmjager minis and with a little luck and even less sleep I should have most of them finished by the end of the week. So like all good wargamers I'm already thinking ahead to my next project: the US Airborne.

They're a much simpler model to paint so I'm hoping to get them finished in the first week of the holidays. While reading some posts on the Warlord forums I noticed a few posts talking about 28mm insignia and rank decals. I had thought about painting this stuff onto the minis in the past but it's a lot of very fiddly work and my brush skills just aren't up to scratch so I wandered over to Company B and bought a sheet of these for $6.40US including postage. They can't be much more painful than putting 1.5mm roundels onto 1/600 aircraft... can they? Well time will tell.

If these go well I think I'll have to grab a sheet each for the Germans and British minis.

Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-75679457464552242582012-11-29T19:03:00.000+11:002012-11-29T19:03:51.336+11:00Vallejo PaintsI've been trying different paints on and off for a while now and while I love my Tamiya paints they are just a huge pain in the ass to work with. Great finish, a great range of colours and the price cannot be beat but the actual process of using the paints, the smell and the fact that some colours tend to react violently with others makes them unfun to work with.

The Vallejo range has always been on my radar but I've kept away from them, mainly due to cost but since I needed to get some more paints for the Fallschirmjagers I figured I'd just bite the bullet and get some. I really like the idea of the dropper type bottle and the fact they mix well with GW stuff is a bonus. And given the range of GW and Mr Hobby stuff I have I shouldn't need to get much more of the Valleo range until the other stuff runs out or dries up.

So I grabbed the following colours from Gus at Zepnix Wargames based on the following painting reference I found on the Warlord Games website.

German Grey (Vallejo 995): Uncovered helmet
Black (Vallejo 950): Webbing, pistol holster, rifle ammo pouches, boots, bayonet scabbard
German Field Grey (Vallejo 830): Trousers and breadbag
Luftwaffe Uniform blue (Vallejo 816): Luftwaffe tunic, field cap, officer's peaked cap
German Camo Orange Ochre (Vallejo 824): Canteen
Middlestone (Vallejo 882): Panzerfaust
Camouflaged jump smocks and helmet covers (Beige 821, Green 823, Brown 984)
Military Green (Vallejo 975): Mess tin and gas mask container

Gus even threw in a bottle of the Army Painter strong tone Quick Shade ink which is fantastic for a few reasons: firstly it was free :), secondly my GW inks are running low and thirdly I've heard good things about their ink range and have wanted to try it out.

So I'll probably start painting the Black Tree Fallschirmjager models either tonight or tomorrow night, photos will follow as soon as I have something worth sharing.

Ok since I just couldn't put you through one more boring post without photos I thought I'd share some of the not so blurry photos of the church in action last Saturday night.

I just love my Zuzzy matt, the texture here while not totally appropriate just looks amazing. The British had the upper hand for a while and managed to force almost half of the German forces to retreat into this this scorched earth garden.
Ok I'm off to undercoat my first squad of minis.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-3135755434017682472012-11-27T03:18:00.000+11:002012-11-27T03:18:45.308+11:0010 Hours and 39 MinutesI just received an email from em-4 miniatures stating that my order has been shipped, after being placed only 10 hours and 39 minutes earlier today. This is just amazing service, almost unheard of really. I'm used to an order sitting in the "processing your order" queue for around a week or two, or longer... yes Black Tree I'm looking at you.

To be honest I buy my dice, tokens and bases from em-4 simply because their prices cannot be beaten, now I can add amazing service to the list.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-85220868274284165492012-11-26T13:07:00.003+11:002012-11-26T13:07:34.259+11:00So many little men!I ran out of bases over the weekend and did a quick count of everything I have and will be getting on Xmas day and I was a little shocked: I need 206 bases!

The breakdown goes like this:

47 x German infantry (Black Tree, Warlord and other misc)
74 x Fallschirmjagers (Black Tree and Warlord)
84 x US Airborne (Black Tree, Warlord and other misc)
1 x Pulp/WWW2 Characters

Now obviously I won't be painting all these guys at once so I decided to order 100 bases and start working on the Fallschirmjagers. With what's left over I'll paint up some of the German infantry as Waffen SS troops.

The game went well on the weekend with both Brendan and jame enjoying their first game of Disposable Heroes, or 28mm WW2 for that matter. I took quite a few photos of the game but they all turned out oretty bad so I won't torture you with them. The church is coming along nicely and was the focus point of the scenario even if most of the action took place in a ruined house across the street.

Sorry for all of these photo free posts lately I'll try to get some WIP shot of the church up later today or tomorrow.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-64350705704973124022012-11-23T05:27:00.001+11:002012-11-23T05:27:45.103+11:00Terrain: 28mm Ruined Church - Part 1I've started putting together the ruined church from Dave Graffam Models. Initially I started building these out of MDF for extra strength but the extra time it took to cut and glue the MDF just sucked all the fun out of building the models. Foam board is much simpler to put together and coupled with some fast drying white glue the process of putting this together has been very enjoyable.
With a little luck I'll get this finished before my next game tomorrow night, I just can't wait to see it on the table.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-27686972175842839062012-11-18T09:06:00.000+11:002012-11-18T09:06:00.688+11:00I Feel... Kinda FunnyMy order from Zepnix arrived on Friday, I know I should be all excited and I am... sort of. So as not to turn this post into an epic novel here's the rundown in brief:

Obtained permission to buy my own Xmas gift this year, wooo!

Made many lists and eventually ordered some Warlord US Paratrooper and Fallschirmjager boxes and blisters.

Next day I added in a copy of Bolt Action as a "for me now" purchase, to save postage.

Next day again I added in the order dice, unnecessary but useful and look nice.

Then I realise I really needed a couple more MG-34 and MG-42 teams for a game next weekend so I added in a Warlord Late War German box set.

The the darnedest thing happened when my wife saw me trying to work out what to take out now and what keep in the box for Xmas. She "suggested" that I should just wait and leave it all in there for Xmas day... and you know what? After a day of serious thought I packed everything* back into the box. No seriously I really did.

I'm suprised and somewhat shocked... is this what "growing up" feels like?

* Well I did keep two blisters of 30mm bases out of the box as I really-really-really need those for next weekend.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-44238408311778768072012-11-11T11:10:00.005+11:002012-11-11T11:10:56.766+11:00AAR - Disposable HeroesAnother game of Disposable Heroes on Saturday night taught me a lot about playing the German. First thing is that regardless of how good their stats look on paper you do not want to split up your squads. The fact that each team has it's own MG-34/MG-43 does not make it strong enough once you start taking casualties. The Russians on the other hand have ruddy huge squads and casualties just don't seem to make any difference, at least initially.

Now I know there's probably a lot of your thinking "well duh what did you expect" but remember I've come from a predominantly skirmish background where my "army" would consist of maybe 12-15 models.

Anyway on the report, sorry for the blurry photos but they I used my phone and they looked ok on the screen.

Roughly 850pts of my Mid War German Panzergrenadiers came up against Bill and his Russians. Simple seek and destroy scenario this time.

Sadly it was haunted by a Russian "ghost squad". That's only half of them too, it took two turns of combined fire from two squads and a HMG MG-42 to reduce them to that amount. With reinforcements coming over the hedge there was no way I was getting the Russian out of that building.
I also grabbed a copy of Bolt Action, which I wasn't too interested in until I found out it was written by Rick "Warmaster" Priestley and Alessio Cavatore. The reviews I've read sounded promising so I thought I'd give it a go. One of the best aspects of historical wargaming is that you can, for the most part, change your rules without invalidating any of your miniatures.

I wasn't too pleased about how expensive the action dice were, about $18.00 a set, but hey it's only a once off pain in the wallet. They do look great and drawing a die out of the bag to see whose unit activates is a very unique twist on the old staple activation cards concept.
It's going to be a hard task to knock Disposable Heroes off it's current throne but then again if anyone can do it I guess it's Mr Preistly and company.

So there'll be no photos or reviews of any of this stuff until some time in the new year, trust me folks no one is more dissapointed than I am :)

The fences have been stuck to their MDF bases and are currently drying beside my as I type this. I'll get some photos up tomorrow night after I've had a chance to get the bases flocked and maybe a coat of paint.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-36566144256743945962012-11-07T19:52:00.000+11:002012-11-08T02:01:09.715+11:00Terrain: 28mm Wooden Fences - Part 2I really haven't been able to spend as much time working on the fences as I would have liked over the last couple days but I have made some progress.

I've managed to build six 15cm longs sections and have started working on the posts. These were a little more fiddly than I initially thought as the balsa wood doesn't offer too much resistance to a sharp hobby knife. Remember: saftey first kids.

Very fiddly work, but worth it in the end.

Cutting the grooves in the posts allow for a nice realistic fit to the fence. I could have just glued them to the two horizontals on the frame but it just didn't look finished.
A little bit more effort that I had expected for this step but like everything in this hobby "easy" and "cheap" rarely go together.
Not quite sure what that "something" is but I'm hoping some fences and telephone poles will get it there.

To start the fences I cut some 1.6mm balsa wood into 3cm strips of varying widths. I intentionally cut them at varying widths and didn't make too much of an effort to cut straight.

Lots and lot of pailings.

I want my fence sections to be roughly 15cm long, I will probably make some shorter 5cm ones at a later time to give a little flexability when laying out terrain.

The frames were glued and left overnight to dry, only this morning did I notice the glue I used was a fast drying one and I could have continued building these last night... oh well.

15cm fence section frames.

With the dry frames it was simply a case of run a bead of glue alling the horizontal frames and start placing the pailings. Again I wasn't too careful about how I placed the pailings and i think the angled ones and broken pailings add some character. I had thought about adding bullet holes to the fence but I want to use these for fantasy games. Maybe I'll make a section or two later with "modern damage".
I've even played a game that's not a board game or a card game. I can't believe that it's been so long since I've posted or played a real life wargame. Well that's all going to change.

Saturday night I introduced Tyler to his first miniatures wargame, Disposable Heroes. What had started as a complex scenario based affair ended up being scaled back to an easier to learn just-shoot-everything game. To keep things moving (you could also read that as I had forgotten most of the rules) I left out the cool toys like armour and guns. Besides it kept the game down to the simple but important elements of movement, firing and morale.

The man cave has become more of a storage area lately so I found it easier to setup in the garage. I have to admit that the table came up very nice indeed.

Tyler picked up the core of the game pretty quickly and the game started to flow nice and quickly. British and Germans were dying all over the table... well mainly around this guy:

Why can't the British LMG's work so well?

The bugger kept passing his morale tests and eventually wiped out an entire squad of British.

We were on turn three when we realised that we had been talking for most of the game and it was now 11:30pm. We called it a draw and finished up for the night :)

I'm really keen to get the miniatures on the table again and I might even make an effort this week to finally finish off building some wooden fences (started them two years ago I think).

Anyway I'm back and reinvigorated so expect to see some more 28mm WW2 action here soon.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-13420265917595263542010-12-12T00:29:00.000+11:002010-12-12T00:29:40.069+11:00First Game of Arkham HorrorI've only played three turns of this game but I already love it. It heavy going trying to work out the rules and remember everything that's going on but the game rewards you for the effort with a level of flavour and atmosphere that's usually reserved for role playing games.

The base game has a heap of stuff and you could easily play it and never get the same game twice. But those of you who know me and my addictive nature won't be surprised to know I've already ordered the Kingsport Horror expansion which adds another board and another metric ton of cards and tokens. I think it'll fit on my table. Speaking of tables it's currently taking up the entire kitchen table so I'll probably have until lunch to finish up or pack up, I'll try to take some photos of the game before either happens.

I should also mention that the game has great solo play, which is fortunate as my kids are too young for the subject matter and my wife would never play this.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-24566940528641519142010-11-13T11:32:00.001+11:002010-11-13T11:32:17.411+11:00Not Exactly Gaming Related…
It’s been pretty quiet on the gaming front for a while now and it’s largely due to me just being too buggered. It comes absolutely packed with cards, counters, tiles and miniatures.

The miniatures are “reprints” of existing D&D miniatures which ensures their compatibility with their skirmish game. To keep the game price down though the miniatures come unpainted, which is something I’ll rectify one day. A nice touch is that they’ve used harder plastic for these miniatures so they don’t suffer as much of the bent sword syndrome that most of the D&D and Star Wars miniatures have.

I think I’ve best heard the rules described as “D&D 4th Edition Lite with No Added Role Play”. This game has dungeons and it comes with dragons but “Dungeons & Dragons” it aint. It’s basically a dungeon crawler, all combat - all the time. Now this isn’t a bad thing and the rules keep things moving along at a brisk pace that makes sure the game never gets dull. The game also has a few elements that I found quite innovative and refreshing:

When a character ‘explores’ a new section of the map a new dungeon tile is placed and a monster is spawned. That monster is represented by a miniature on the table and a card that is placed with the player who spawned it. That monster (or mosters) are activated during the “Villian” phase of that player. It works with ease and creates an initiative process that “feels right”.
The second innovation is what allows the game to be played solo or cooperatively: each monster card has a list of conditions and actions that you evaluate in order each time the monster activates. It may be something like “If the monster is 2 or more tiles away from the nearest hero it will move adjacent to that hero and attack with a pounce attack”. Followed by “If the monster is adjacent to a hero it will attack with a bite”. It’s simple and it makes it quite clear what each monster will do.

The dungeon tiles are laid out almost randomly. The adventure guide will state which tiles will be used for the dungeon entrance and most will state to place certain named tiles in certain positions in the tile draw deck. When placing a tile you must place the tile so that the edge with a black or white triangle matches up with the edge of the tile you are currently standing on. It’s simple enough that my five year understood within minutes.

The game comes with an adventure book with a dozen or so adventures all themed around Castle Ravenloft and our favourite Vampire Strahd.

The first adventure is a solo quest and I took the opportunity learn the rules and get all nostalgic about adventures past.

I took the Dwarven Cleric and had to escape the crypt before Strahd woke up. Each tile I placed with a white triangle increased a timer that marked sunset.

A quick shot of most of the cards, tokens and status markers. I only just made it to the exit in time.

The game took a little getting used to, I’m a second edition player myself. High armour classes are good now, (no more THAC0’s – woo hoo!) so it’s a case of roll d20 and add attack bonus to beat armour class… easy. Each attack does a fixed amount of damage and state effects like “slowed” or “immobile” are automatic so no saving throws required.

At the first read through of the rules I was a little disappointed and kept thinking “this isn’t D&D”. But after playing the game I realised that “it is D&D” but it’s “not roleplay”. All the staples are there: brick fighters and wizards with magic missiles all running to the clearic for help when things get rough. You need to play as a team and coordinate exploration otherwise you’ll get overrun with monsters.

What I Liked

Playing with my kids. We were on this adventure together, we’d all win or we’d all lose. My eldest loves the game and got most of the concepts from the get go, I think we’ll be playing a lot. My youngest struggled to maintain interest for the whole game but picking up his character didn’t slow the game down and it’s likely we’ll play with two characters each from now on anyway.
Fun: this game takes the best parts of D&D combat and puts it all in a retail box. And lets face it, we played D&D because it was cool to kill imaginary monsters and get lots and lots of imaginary loot.
It’s D&D: or the closest I’ll get to playing D&D for a while.
Miniatures: lots and lots of miniatures

What I Didn’t Like

I would have liked to make my own character but it’s probably nothing swapping the mini out wouldn’t fix anyway. I’d just like my rogue to feel like “my rouge”.
Loot: you don’t get much. I’m not asking for a Vorpal Sword or a Holy Avenger here. A short sword +1 will do for starters. Could easily be fixed with some home brew cards but I’m hoping an expansion will remedy this.
Only first and second level characters? The game is pretty harsh on the characters and life expectancy isn’t too high but let players get to 10th level and they’ll keep trying.
There isn’t too much about this game I’m that I’m really not happy with but if I had to pick something I’d say that once again the designed have designed a box insert that simply doesn’t expect the players to put sleeves on their cards. There’s a spot for everything in this box and it holds everything perfectly, until you put sleeves on the cards and they no longer fit.

Expansions?

Yes please! There’s the Wrath of Ashardalon coming out in 2011 which I’m sure to snap up. But I’d like to see a set of cards made available that allowed the use of at least some of the miniatures already available.

Some more interesting tiles wouldn’t go astray either. The game as-is has plenty of scope for some fantastic adventures but I hope the game gains enough popularity (cough sales) that Wizards pays this game the attention is desires.

Or if they wanted to be really cheeky they could put articles and cards in their magazines Dragon or Dungeon. I’d buy a subscription if it got me new stuff for the games.

Bottom Line

It’s not the Strahd I remember but it’s defiantly the fun that I remember. I may even pick up the Red Box to see what all the fuss over fourth edition is all about.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-20009832150575275802010-11-01T19:25:00.001+11:002010-11-01T19:25:52.615+11:00So Close, Yet So Far…
The Call of Cthulhu Living Card Game arrived today. The box was intact but it did look like it had been kicked all the way from England. The contents were pretty much safe and sound, the main game box had a crink in one side that should push out easily enough.

The urge to start open the boxes and start playing is killing me. I’ll have to put them away out of sight. After all I only have to wait eight, long… tempting… weeks. So working of the dispatch and delivery dates for this stuff, the Talisman stuff should be here early next week. And to top it off I can’t distract myself by buying anything off my wish list because of the Secret Santa.

Ooohh, so this is what it’s like to be driven insane.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-67084217150807854442010-10-31T12:46:00.001+11:002010-10-31T12:46:45.342+11:00HeroQuest
With Talisman coming this xmas I thought it might be a good idea to ease the kids into it with some games of HeroQuest. I lost my boxset years ago and I’ve managed to build an almost complete set from a few eBay purchases. The only thing I’m missing is one combat dice (3 instead of four) and the hero miniatures. A quick dip into my Lord of the Rings collection found some suitable hero miniatures in Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas.

The brave heroes all ready to venture forth, Ethan (left) took the wizard and the dwarf while Dylan had the elf and barbarian. I played the Evil Wizard, muwhahahahahaha…

The wizard was feeling very adventurous and scouted out ahead while the others dealt with the nasty inhabitants of the dungeon… only to run into some serious trouble of his own.

A quick sleep spell to put down one of the chaos warrior and then a hasty tactical retreat… right into an even bigger mess!

Things were looking bad for the wizard until the dwarf finally managed to come to help. One of the spells was doubled up and the missing spell: Heal Wounds.

Fun was had by all and the kids are keen to play again. After playing a lot of Carcassonne the setup time for HeroQuest seemed to take forever. Talisman is going to be even worse… I’ll have to look into some of the card holders and tuck boxes on Board Game Geek to help manage the components better.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-9211725563781655232010-10-31T09:28:00.001+11:002010-10-31T09:28:53.471+11:00The Dice Tower Secret Santa
The guys over at The Dice Tower are once again running their Secret Santa gift exchange. This is an awesome idea, basically you send your details to the guys at the Dice Tower with a wish list of games you would like to receive. They work out who you are going to be a Secret Santa for and send you their details. You then simply make a purchase based on their list and send it off.

Have a look here to see what people got sent last year. I don’t know for sure but the concept of a game in a box is very appealing at the moment. So in continuation of this trend I picked up a copy of Carcassonne by Rio Grande Games.

It’s a tile game where players earn points by placing randomly drawn tiles to build cities, roads and farms. Very simple concept with very addictive gameplay.

My eldest (eight) picked up the game in under 5 minutes and by the end of the first game had most of the basic tactics down.

The first of our two games tonight was much closer with me winning by a mere point. During our second game it seemed like he had forgotten how to play and was starting cities everywhere but not finishing any of them. When I questioned him about it he replied “It’s ok Dad I know what I’m doing”. In the latter part of the game he joined them all up into an uber 17 tile city with 5 heralds (totalling a whopping 44 points it beat my current score on it’s own) and to add insult to injury he had placed farmers in strategic places to not only gain points from his cities but most of mine as well.

After totalling his points it was obvious there was no need to count mine, I was owned.

I’m so proud.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-74973460362745099482010-10-28T04:26:00.001+11:002010-10-28T04:26:53.209+11:00More Talisman Stuff
I can’t help myself… well I can usually but when a good offer comes along I seem to lose all resolve.

When I was ordering the Talisman stuff I was really keen on getting the Dungeon and Reaper expansions since they seem to be very popular with those “in the know” on sites such as Board Game Geek. Sadly both of those expansions were unavailable at my usual haunts Maelstrom Games and Milsims Games.

I turned to eBay and couldn’t find anything that had a reasonable price AND reasonable postage. I took a gamble with some “Make an Offer” entries though and while going through the deluge of “Offer Declined” messages tonight I noticed one lonely “Offer Accepted”. Woo Hoo! So I managed to pick up a new copy of the Reaper expansion for less than retail including postage from the US. I’m as shocked as I am happy!

This does mean I’ll need more card sleeves now.
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-48777421900416691522010-10-27T20:39:00.001+11:002010-10-27T20:39:10.909+11:00Man Cave Update
The other day my managed to score two more sets of shelves and a table for my man cave. Great news, except it would mean I’d have to get back to cleaning it up to make room for them all.

Thankfully most of the dirty work has already been done, now it’s more of sorting stuff out and making some tough decisions on stuff that has been hanging around in boxes for years.

Here’s the two tables in painting mode (left) and gaming mode (right). In gaming mode they measure 4x5.5 feet which should be perfect for anything I play. If I ever feel the need to go 6x8 I can easily make up some chipboard tops. The grey table is about 4cm shorter than the white table but I can sort that out by making some risers for the legs.

The TV still works, I was afraid that it wouldn’t after getting shifted around so much. I never owned the game but two of my friends did so it saw a lot of table time. I never really claimed to understand all the rules but I knew enough to do the basic stuff and I left all the tricky card stuff to my mates.

A little research and a strong nostalgia filter I came to a couple conclusions:

First the game is pretty much random in every way. As a kid I didn’t care about this too much as it meant that even when you were down you weren’t completely out. It also means that the game has a huge replay factor. That’s when point two hit me…
I could get my kids to play this. I’m sure I’m more than capable to manage all the cards and tricky stuff and just let him get on with rolling dice.
The game sure looks purty now. And is bigger.

The left photo shows the board size comparison between (top to bottom) 3rd edition, 1st/2nd edition and 4th edition on the bottom. The right photo shows game cards from (top to bottom) 4th edition, 2nd edition and 3rd edition.

It seems that while the cards of the fourth edition are bigger than in the previous editions the little buggers are in fact, little. I’ll see how much table time the game gets before doing my usual thing and buying everything.

Anyway I’m off to buy a truckload of card sleeves…
Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6102150895363279807.post-44449288111873857582010-10-19T11:42:00.002+11:002010-10-25T03:20:53.317+11:00The Incursion BeginsPlayed the first two missions of Incursion on Saturday night. The mechanics are simple but have a subtle layer of complexity added by the cards and command points mechanic.
Mission one had two APE’s facing off against a horde of zombies that kept growing by six zombies per turn. I went with the Allies and Brendan took the SWG. I made a big mistake by standing and firing at the zombies. Big mistake. You need to keep moving and keep shooting. Also as far as the Allies are concerned, corridors=good, intersections=bad. You do not want zombies to start surrounding you as their hand to hand attacks increase in power when hitting the same target. By the time I had worked out what to do there were around 20+ zombies on the table and most of them between me and my exit point.
Dark times.
The second mission gave us more resource points and I was able to field two grunts, a HMG and Sarge. The SWG brought along some sturmzombies, two bomberzombies, Hans Von X and a werewolf.

Splitting me men into two teams and taking great advantage of reaction fire allowed the APEs an easy victory for this mission. That and the fact I was rolling three dice for reaction fire instead of only two meant that I was hitting way more often than I should have. But it also meant that I was rolling doubles more often too and doubles cancels reaction fire for that player that turn.
Other than that play went smoothly and fun was had by all. The first game took close to an hour to play but there were a lot of interruptions and we were referring to the rulebook a bit. The second game was done in maybe 30-40 minutes and I don’t think we touched the rulebook much.
Can’t wait to get this onto the table again.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03620926745225120350noreply@blogger.com2
